General Interns work closely with Field Representatives and the District Director. They frequently interact directly with constituents, attend community events, and assist with special projects.
Responsibilities May Include:
- Respond to constituent requests via email, letter, and phone
- Work with staff on special projects and assignments
- Assist in research and planning for upcoming events and projects
- Attend events with Field Representatives and the Assemblymember
- Perform outreach to community leaders, constituents, and interest groups
- Answer phones, greet visitors, restock supplies, and other general clerical tasks
Requirements:
The ideal candidate may be currently enrolled in school: undergraduate, graduate, community college, or other secondary education program. The ideal candidate will have an interest in state and local policy, community organizing, government affairs, political science, or other related fields. They will be available to attend occasional weekend and evening events.
Desired Skills:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work with minimal supervision
- Experience conducting research
- Critical thinking and creative problem solving
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and competing deadlines simultaneously
- Proficient in using Microsoft Word and Excel
- Fluency in a second language is beneficial

Interns have the opportunity to earn a letter of recommendation and may seek school/university credit. Applicants seeking school credit must notify the hiring manager prior to an interview.
Many legislators and district and policy staff began their careers in public service with an internship in a district office. Interns will gain valuable education and work experience by fully participating in agreed-upon work hours. All internship work is voluntary and interns will not receive any monetary compensation.
