The California State Assembly Internship Program is one of the best ways to learn about the inner workings of your state government and how legislators serve the local community. Assemblymember Isaac Bryan is looking for bright, self-motivated, and energetic individuals interested in gaining experience in a State Assembly District Office.
Internship Description:
A legislator's District Office does the important work of keeping the local community connected with the legislative work in Sacramento, and connecting constituencies with state programs and agencies. This is accomplished through community-based events, constituent casework, outreach campaigns, and everyday involvement with the district community. As an intern, you will provide support to District Staff with special events, constituent services and inquiries, and other special projects related to the duties of the District Office.
General Intern General Interns work closely with Field Representatives and the District Director. Responsibilities include more direct interaction with constituents, attending community events, and assisting with special projects.
- Engage with constituents via telephone or in-person
- Assist with data entry
- Respond to constituent requests
- Work with staff on special projects and assignments
- Assist in research and planning of upcoming events and projects
- Attend events with Field Representatives and the Assemblymember
- Perform outreach to community leaders, constituents, and interest groups
- Other miscellaneous tasks, as required
Communications Intern Communications Interns work closely with the Communications Director. Responsibilities are more directly related to crafting content for a wide variety of outreach campaigns, managing social media, working with news media, organizing press events, and other special projects. Responsibilities may include:
- Assist in drafting social media captions, talking points, press releases, and other materials
- Operate official state social media accounts under supervision
- Track news coverage of specific events, topics, etc.
- Research and provide brief reports on various issues for communications purposes
- Create content for social media posts, e-Alerts, and newsletters
- Attend interviews and other media events
- Other miscellaneous tasks, as required
As part of the District Office team, all interns will contribute to general office tasks such as answering phones, fielding inquiries, and general office procedures as well as providing constituent services and assisting with constituent casework.
Requirements:
The ideal candidate must be currently enrolled in school: undergraduate, graduate, community college, or other secondary education program. The ideal candidate will have an interest in state and local policy, communications, public relations, and other related fields.
Desired Skills:
Additionally, the ideal candidate will have the following:
- Experience conducting research
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work with minimal supervision
- Critical thinking and creative problem solving
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and competing deadlines simultaneously
- Proficient in using Canva (Communications Interns only)
- Proficient in using Microsoft Word and Excel
- Fluency in a second language is beneficial

Interns have the opportunity to earn a letter of recommendation and may also qualify for school/university credit. Many legislators and district and policy staff began their careers in public service with an internship in a District office. Interns will gain valuable education and work experience by fully participating in agreed-upon work hours. All internship work is voluntary and students will not receive any monetary compensation.
