Digital Communications Interns work closely with the Communications Director. Interns craft content for a wide variety of outreach campaigns, manage social media, maintain press contacts, help organize press events, and other special projects.
Responsibilities May Include:
- Create content for social media posts, e-Alerts, and newsletters
- Assist in drafting social media captions, talking points, press releases, and other materials
- Operate official state social media accounts under supervision
- Track news coverage of specific events, topics, etc.
- Research and provide brief reports on issues
- Maintain directory of press contacts
- Attend interviews and other media events (occasionally weekends and evenings)
- Other miscellaneous tasks, as required
As part of the District Office team, all interns will contribute to general office tasks such as answering phones, fielding inquiries, and general office procedures.
Requirements:
The ideal candidate must be currently enrolled in school: undergraduate, graduate, community college, or other secondary education program. The ideal candidate will have an interest in state and local policy, digital media, communications, public relations, external affairs, and other related fields.

Interns have the opportunity to earn a letter of recommendation and may seek school/university credit. Applicants seeking school credit must notify the hiring manager prior to an interview.
Many legislators and district and policy staff began their careers in public service with an internship in a district office. Interns will gain valuable education and work experience by fully participating in agreed-upon work hours. All internship work is voluntary and interns will not receive any monetary compensation.
